Broadway shows aren't the only way to go. As a New Yorker I wanted to pass along another great place to keep in mind for day-of-discount tickets. The David Rubenstein Atrium, an airy space on Broadway that also offers free WiFi, reasonably priced snacks and a pleasing place to catch your breath (think roaring A/C on a hot day), houses a box office offering discount tickets on attractions at Lincoln Center -- New York Philharmonic, New York City Ballet, Metropolitan Opera, American Ballet Theater, Jazz at Lincoln Center and whatever plays and musicals are on at the complex. Discounts vary but they're often excellent. Address: 61 West 62nd; (212) 875-5350

When I was in the West End a few years back, there were a few places that sold "discount tickets" in the morning for that evening's shows. The ticket place we checked out was in Leicester Square. They had a good selection but didn't have the time we wanted so we decided to chance it and buy tickets at the theater before the show. It turned out that it wasn't even a big deal, they had plenty of tickets and we were able to pick our seats and sit together. It was much easier than most theater experiences I've heard about. Granted it was a few years ago and it was in the tourist offseason. Good luck!

I would e-mail the theaters you are interested in visiting and see if they have any discount programs for day-of shows. Another way to get discounts is with a student ID.
