Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving from all your friends here at Dotting The Map! We hope you have safe and fun turkey travels!
Just a note that if you thought travel was stressful on Wednesday, you will be surprised to find out that according to USA Today it’s only the 36th busiest day of the year to travel!! Apparently summer days call for far more stressful times at airports!

not actually a picture of Desi... although she is a doll!
My beautiful sister in law Desi (or often referred to as Debbie for those of you who mistake her name tag at 30,000 feet) is my favorite flight attendant. I wanted to interview her for my blog because so many (including me) find the career as a flight attendant so fascinating. To be in a new city every night, to meet so many people, and the flying privileges we can’t forget the flying privileges! So here you go, an interview with my favorite in flight safety guru talking about why she chose to become a flight attendant and offering those expert tips on flying in the friendly skies.
DTM: Why or how did you decide to become a flight attendant?
Desi: Because our family was so big, when we went on vacation we had to drive. I flew for the first time when I was in 11th grade to go to Spain. During my flight I decided that being a flight attendant must be the most amazing job. . . you get to FLY all the time, and you get to layover in places like SPAIN! I knew then that I wanted to be one, at least until I’d gotten the travel bug out of my system. I made friends with one of the flight attendants en route and he gave me the numbers to every main line company flying. I had a few years before I was old enough to apply but as soon as I could, I applied, and got a job shortly there after.
DTM: How long have you worked as a flight attendant?
Desi: I’ve been with SkyWest for 5 years in February, but before that was with PSA (US Airways) for a year.
DTM: What question are you asked the most?
Desi: Honestly, probably where is this flight going?

When choosing a hotel the amenities that mattered to me were simple. Location, price and rating were what determined whether or not if I would choose to book a room. A posh and chic hotel located downtown was always on my wish list. But due to recent events in my life, priorities have changed. The transition from couple to family has changed my perspective on vacations and traveling and what’s important when I am choosing a hotel.
So what exactly makes a family friendly hotel? Is it just offering cribs and free breakfast to children under 12? Perhaps it’s more. Perhaps it involves the overall attitude of the hotel. There are definitely hotels built for romantic getaways or hotels that are built to be five star extravagances catering to the rich and famous. Maybe family friendly hotels are built from the ground up with an attitude of fun and adventure. Maybe it’s more than just a checklist of a few amenities.

It’s that time of year again. I love the holidays and I love traveling to different cities for the holidays. My number one favorite is San Francisco. Ice-skating, Ghiradelli chocolate and not to mention the fabulous shopping and beautiful cityscape. Every year growing up my youth group would go caroling on the cable cars through the city, it doesn’t get better than that.
Speaking of the holidays, it’s time to start making our shopping lists. I have to admit I do enjoy shopping quite a bit and I especially like shopping for gifts for others. So I decided to help you out with your Christmas lists. I have compiled a list of five great gift ideas for the travel aficionado in your family.
1. Travel and Leisure Magazine- I love this magazine and it proudly sits on my coffee table and is changed out each month. I got a subscription for my birthday as a gift, which I thought was extremely personal and thoughtful. It’s full of beautiful photographs, travel ideas, and well-written articles. It serves as my inspiration. Although reading it does make me a tad antsy as I want to travel everywhere and anywhere.

2. The U-Pillow- Comes in so many different shapes, sizes, and materials but all has the same purpose, keeping your neck comfy on a flight, train ride, or car ride. I cannot tell you how many red-eye flights being stuck in the middle seat this pillow has gotten me through. Plus you can put it on your tray table and lay face down or put it against the window and lay against it. It has many uses.

Details can be found here, but basically due to the increase of violent crime in Columbia the US Department of State is warning against travel to the area. The warning also states that it encorages anyone who is traveling to the country to be sure to register with the US Embassy through the State Department’s website (which is always a good idea).
Happy and safe travels everyone!
