Besides the nightclubs that all have their own Halloween parties, Las Vegas is a great place for families to come and celebrate the spooky holiday. Many of the hotels and hot spots on the strip offer their own attractions that you can feel comfortable bringing your family to no matter the age (some attractions are not suitable for children under the age of 12 so keep that in mind when planning your trip!). There really is something for everyone.

Here is a list of some of the fun events and attractions going on in Las Vegas this Halloween:

Haunted Reef at Mandalay Bay

For a fun, friendly, and exciting aquatic adventure, consider looking into the “Haunted Reef” at the Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay. Instead of soothing ocean sounds you will find rattling chains, creaky doors and scary music. This event will be going on all day of Saturday October 29. Ticket prices for adults are $18 and $12 for children. This event during Halloween in Vegas will include a spooky tour of the shark reef, as well as other exciting events still to be announced.

13th Floor Experience at Circus Circus

Interested in a spooky, scary haunted tour? Consider the “13th Floor Experience” at Circus Circus. The guided tour through the 13th floor will last about 13 minutes, and will lead you through 13 frightening rooms. General admission tickets are $13 and the event will be held October 1-31, a month-long celebration of Halloween in Vegas.

Fright Dome at Circus Circus

Beginning Saturday, Oct. 1 Fright Dome takes over The Adventuredome at Circus Circus and this year will partner with Compass Films International to theme two of its five haunted houses after the legendary horror film “Halloween.” Dark and fog-filled, Fright Dome creates a chilling atmosphere with roaming characters, high-powered strobes, multicolored lasers and five acres of fright made up of all new extreme scare zones, rides, attractions and live shows. Not recommended for children under 12. The attraction is open Oct. 1 – 2; 7 – 9; 13 – 16; 20 – 23; 26 – 31 from 7 p.m. – midnight. Tickets are $36.95 (includes five haunted houses, macabre magician shows, extreme scare zones, rides and attractions).

Madame Tussauds Las Vegas “After Dark”

Madame Tussauds hosts “After Dark,” an interactive and haunted experience that will take over the wax museum Oct. 21 – 23 and 28 – 31 from 9 p.m. to midnight. Visitors who dare attend will be delighted to see, hear and feel the mysteries and supernatural activity surrounding Madame Tussauds Las Vegas. General admission to After Dark is $20.

Oktober Fright Fest Fremont Street Experience

Fremont Street Experience is hosting the third annual Oktober Fright Fest Oct. 3 – 31, the ultimate festival that combines Oktoberfest and Halloween for a month-long street party. The festivities kick off Monday, Oct. 3 and end on Halloween, Monday, Oct. 31. Fremont Street Experience will once again transform itself into the ultimate adult playground with Viva Vision light and sound shows themed to “Time Warp” and “Monster Mash,” outdoor bars featuring beer and drink specials, the Second Annual Fall Beer Festival at Golden Nugget and three free Halloween-themed stage shows.

There are lots of great activities for everyone in the family to enjoy for Halloween in Las Vegas! Whether it be a spooky haunted house, or a crazy costume contest at a nightclub, Las Vegas is versatile enough to meet the needs of your itinerary!

I’ve been asked quite a few times lately what the best shows currently running in Las Vegas are. Las Vegas is a great destination to visit and enjoy premium entertainment. The shows and acts are constantly changing and re-inventing themselves. While there are so many to choose from I have outlined some of our favorites and the ones that receive the best reviews.

Right now some of the top rated Las Vegas shows to see are:

Ka Cirque Du Soleil- I have heard feedback from people who have attended Cirque shows in the past and are frustrated that they couldn’t follow a plot line. This will not be the case at Ka. The plot follows Imperial Twins who are separated by an attack on their Far Eastern palace and overcome adversity to be reunited. The theater itself is breathtaking and don’t be surprised to see bungee jumping warriors from the ceiling. The show runs Tuesday through Saturday at the MGM Grand in the Ka Theater.

The Lion King- Adapted from the Disney animated picture, this is a visually stunning and beautiful play that takes place in the African jungle and follows a young lion’s journey to become King. You won’t want to miss this Tony-Award winning Broadway sensation. Tickets start at $66 and shows run everyday except Friday at the Mandalay Bay Theater. Must be 6 years of age or older.

Viva Elvis Cirque Du Soleil- This Cirque show is unique in that it pays tribute to the life and music of Elvis through acrobatics, video production, and live music. This is the only Cirque show where the band is predominately onstage the whole production. There are 24 subwoofers buried in the theater floor which gives it a more concert like feel. Even if you aren’t a diehard Elvis fan you will be impressed and entranced throughout the whole show. Viva ELVIS runs at the Aria Resort and Casino.

Jabbawockeez- You may remember this dance crew as the winner of MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew back in 2008 but they have come a long way since then. They are more than just white masks and white gloves and you will love it how they tell a story through hip-hop dance moves. Prices range from $62.70 with daily shows at the Monte Carlo Theater.

Have you visited Las Vegas recently? What was your favorite show?

Some people may not realize that Las Vegas is a great destination option for family vacations. I remember as a kid visiting Las Vegas and being excited by all the lights, glitz and glamour. Of course my parents did all they could to carefully shield us away from the half naked showgirls in the lobbies, but being young and naïve we barely even noticed. Think about all the fantastic swimming pools, roller coasters, arcades and shops that they have strewn about the strip- it’s a kid’s paradise disguised as an adult playhouse!

Even the littlest Vegas go-ers can enjoy some time on the strip. There are many activities and attractions that babies and toddlers will enjoy. Here is a list of a few toddler friendly Las Vegas activities:

Bellagio, Las Vegas Atrium and Fountains: Each season and for special holidays the atrium at the Bellagio changes to showcase vibrant colors, flowers, and shapes all that will appeal to a little one. Once you are finished exploring the Atrium you can head outside for the fountain show. My little girl loves to watch and wonder at the fountains and music. Very entertaining for all ages.

MGM Grand Las Vegas Lion Habitat: Little kids love animals and love the opportunity to see large ones they usually only see in books up close in real life. Both kids and adults will enjoy the Lion Habitat and learning all about the majestic King of the animal world.

Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas Shark Reef: This is not just your average aquarium. This is an impressive undersea habitat featuring 2,000 different species including rare crocodiles, jellie fish and endangered sea turtles. Not only will your toddler be pointing and oohing and awing but you will as well.

Secret Garden at Mirage, Las Vegas: This is a great place to explore for kids of all ages. It’s not everyday you get to see dolphins play and tigers roar. It’s an enchanting place to spend your afternoon and it will be hard to remember that tiger’s aren’t quite cuddly as they look when your toddler is begging to bring one home.

Wildlife Habitat at the Flamingo, Las Vegas: We love this fun free little wild life habitat nestled in the middle of the Flamingo. Appropriately you will find a flock of flamingos to gaze and wonder at, as well as koi fish, turtles, ducks, swans and even pheasant!

New York New York, Las Vegas Arcade: While many of the games and activities are a little old for the younger crowd, many toddlers will enjoy running around and looking at all the lights and noise in amazement. They will also enjoy playing along with some of the games and can definitely find a prize to their liking.

What are some of your favorite places to take your toddlers when you visit Las Vegas, Nevada as a family?

It’s hard to pinpoint the “best” of anything in Las Vegas. Especially when it comes to buffets, as it is the most prominent and publicized dining option in Las Vegas. Also, there are so many determining factors when choosing the best. The best could be best value, or best price. It could also be the most popular or gets the best reviews. Don’t forget food quality, and best variety and selection. It would be almost impossible to base it on all of these factors and put out a true list of best buffets in Las Vegas.

So instead, when putting together this list I imagined you all as my close friends. Often time friends and readers come to me for referrals to hotels and restaurants and I don’t want to let them down. Because it’s all about the experience and kitschy Las Vegas feel, I chose five buffets that excite me and that I truly enjoy going to, and hope you will benefit from this list and be able to stuff your face with delicious and satisfying food and not smuggle home some tomatoes and bread rolls to throw at me later.

So here is our pick for top five best buffets in Las Vegas, in no particular order of course:

Village Buffet at the Paris Hotel Las Vegas. The Village Buffet has been voted Best in Las Vegas by the Las Vegas Review Journal for the past three consecutive years. We love this buffet because it’s a little different than your typical five-station set up with cuisine being represented from different countries. No, you will only find the best in regional French specialties. And the dishes are much better than your average buffet fare. We love the atmosphere and cutesy décor. It’s great for those who have always wanted to try French food but haven’t known where to start. The price is pretty great too, considering it’s in the middle of the strip and only $25* for dinner.

Wicked Spoon at the Cosmopolitan Las Vegas. This is one of the strip’s newest (if not THE newest) buffet. It’s perfect for those who have been there – ate that. Wicked Spoon takes a different approach to the typical buffet spread by providing every dish in individual size portions, Tapas style, with a unique and visually appealing presentation. They offer dishes inspired from American, Japanese, Italian and French cuisine. Don’t miss the truffle infused potato au gratin, Korean beef, and for dessert mini chopped apples and strawberries dipped in chocolate and salted peanut gelato. It’s also decently priced at $27* for dinner.

The Buffet at Bellagio Las Vegas. This buffet lives up to its reputation, is highly acclaimed, and usually comes with a pretty decent wait time. It’s well organized and maintained, and offers a very impressive selection. The selection includes dining choices from America, Italy, Mexico, Asia and more. Guests will enjoy the sushi selection, Kobe sirloin, juicy prime rib, beef wellington, goose, quail and duck. Many maintain hands down that the Bellagio’s buffet has the best desserts at any buffet found on the strip. Some of our favorites include the gelato selection and the pastries. Dinner ranges in price from around $30 to $37* for dinner.

The Buffet at Wynn Las Vegas. This buffet and the buffet at the Bellagio are constantly being pinned against each other for best buffet on the strip by locals. While their food is excellent and price is pretty comparable, that is where similarities end. While the buffet may be a little less extravagant in size then at the Bellagio, the food is tasty, well presented and is made in small batches and replaced regularly. You will love the classy atmosphere of this buffet. While desserts are the usual weakness to buffets, you will not find that to be the case at the Wynn, they have fantastic dessert selections. And with the upscale meat selection of pre-cracked crab legs, shrimp cocktail, lobster ravioli, lamb chops, venison, and top sirloin you will be able to understand the $35* price tag.

Village Seafood Buffet at the Rio Las Vegas. While the Rio also has the Carnival World Buffet, it’s the Village Seafood Buffet that is the real show-stopper, especially if you enjoy tasty high quality seafood. It’s also our most expensive buffet on the list at $39.99* for dinner. Take a trip around the seven seas and enjoy baby lobster tails, crab legs with delicious dipping sauces, clams, mussels, sashimi, oysters, shrimp, several types of fish and much more! Save room for dessert because you won’t want to miss out on the fantastic tiramisu. I think it’s safe to say if you are not a seafood fan, this may not be the buffet for you. Probably best to stick with the Carnival World Buffet, but many argue this is the best buffet in all of Las Vegas.

There you have it, five delicious buffets to gorge yourselves silly on. Would love to hear from other’s what buffets they think are the best that I may or may not have covered.

*Prices vary on day and time and change often.

It used to be Las Vegas was about 25 cent shrimp cocktails and going there with a pocket full of quarters in hopes that you would double or even triple your investment. Those days are long gone and now are the days of luxury, high rollers, lush, and anything else sinful by nature. However, this is not always true either. Las Vegas has done a rather good job at marketing themselves as a family city. Casinos offer roller coasters, movie theaters, food courts, and arcades to keep the kids at bay so the parents can gamble. Las Vegas is truly a city where anyone can find something to do and be happy.

Even the penny pinchers (i.e. me) can find solace as there is a load of free stuff offered on and off the strip in Las Vegas. Some of my favorites are:

On the Strip:

The Bellagio Atrium: I love the atrium and it changes for each season and holiday, so it is something you can visit every time you go and it will always be different. It’s a family favorite.

MGM Grand Lions Habitat: In the middle of the casino there is a special habitat made and maintained just for lions! Usually during the day there are about two adult lions. They also have a lion expert there to talk to you about the lions, their likes and dislikes, and some educational facts. It’s really actually cool. And in the morning you can go and they have baby cubs you can get your picture taken with (not free).

M&M World: I have been there a lot and while walking around the shop is fun and they have some cool products, not very many people know they also offer a free 3-D show! It’s on the top floor and you have to be there at the right time to experience it (ask someone about it).

CBS Television City at MGM: a place where you can watch and rate upcoming shows on CBS. It’s a little time consuming (about an hour) but it’s a different and can be fun- depending on the show.

The Volcano at the Mirage is kind of fun as well as the pirate show, Sirens at Treasure Island (although not to sure if the pirate show is for kids), or you could check out the Fremont Street Experience (a great place to find the deep fried twinkie). If you do go down to Fremont don’t forget to look up and see the cool LCD screen shows.

Off the Strip:

Ethel M’s Chocolate Factory and Botanical Garden: located about 15 miles off the strip on Sunset Blvd. Ethel M offers a free factory tour where you can view the 50 different types of chocolates being made, and you get a free sample at the end of the tour! After you are done drooling over the chocolate and eating your sample, you can walk off the calories at the botanical gardens and learn about different types of cactus and other plants native to the area. It’s a really pretty walk and interesting all at the same time. AND It’s FREE!

Masquerade Show in the Sky at the Rio: A party in the sky and a chance to collect beads! Kind of like Mardi Gras but from the convenience of your slot machine. It’s worth seeing at least once in your life.

Hoover Dam: It’s about 20 miles south east on highway 95. But it’s a sight to be seen. Famous in it’s own right and has been rated by the American Society of Civil Engineers as one of America’s Seven Modern Civil Engineering Wonders. Worth the trip out in my opinion.

If you are like me and love to shop but fancy designer clothing is not your style (or your budget) there are also a number of outlet malls in the area that may suite your fancy. Just down the strip you have the Las Vegas Outlet Mall which is actually pretty impressive. Has a huge Nike store, tons of skate shops, and even a Mikasa outlet store (my mom’s personal favorite). The mall tends to be a huge tourist attraction but I fear that over the year’s the mall has lost it’s outlet muster and the prices are starting to be comparable to their non-outlet companions. Still worth the trip. If you are willing to drive about 40 miles south of Las Vegas on Interstate 15 to Primm Nevada you will find the Fashion Outlets of Las Vegas. I have never personally shopped at these outlets, but I have heard rave reviews of those who have. Outlets you will find there include Coach, Hollister, Banana Republic, J. Crew, Gap, Old Navy and many more.

Las Vegas is for everyone, even those on a tight budget. I have always challenged myself to think outside the box and find new adventures every time I go. Las Vegas is a magical place and has much more to offer than just Sin City and gambling. I on

Hopefully my secrets will add some value!

1. Sweet Potato French Fries, Squatters, Downtown SLC. Squatters Pub and Brewery is by far my favorite restaurant in all of Salt Lake City and trust me there are quite a few good ones to choose from. I have never had one thing from their menu that I haven’t enjoyed. I’m not a drinker but if you are you will enjoy a variety of choices brewed right under their own roof. But what I enjoy the most is their perfectly crunchy sweet potato french fries… but I’ll skip the fry sauce.

2. Reindeer Sausage, Anchorage, Alaska. On Sunday mornings in the heart of Anchorage they have a market downtown with fresh produce, Alaskan souvenirs, and various other food vendors. Among those vendors they sell Reindeer Sausage that is savory and delicious. Reid loved his so much he wants to go back just for more.

3. Cheap(er) Buffets in Las Vegas. What would a visit to Las Vegas be without a trip to the buffet? The buffets on the strip are rather costly but you can get the same quality buffet at much less cost if you step away from the strip for awhile and visit one of the Station Casinos located all around Las Vegas and Henderson. My favorite is Sunset Station Casino.

Las Vegas is well known as the ultimate getaway and has some of the world’s best shopping, world’s best dining, world’s best accommodations and of course some of the world’s best entertainment. The shows come in a large variety with magicians, legendary performers, Broadway musicals and plays and of course the many different Cirque du Soleil shows.

In our most recent getaway to Las Vegas for the weekend we had the privilege of attending Mystere, a world class Cirque du Soleil show that is permanently located at the Treasure Island Hotel and Casino. It’s no doubt that this was the highlight of our trip and we looked forward to it all weekend.

Mystere is actually a groundbreaking show because it paved the way for the rest of the Cirque du Soleil shows being that it was the first of its kind to be permanently set in Las Vegas. Mystere provides a mixture of acrobats, gymnastics, dance, opera, new age music and comedy all wrapped up nicely into a circus style of entertainment with it’s own unique flair.

The show keeps you on the edge of your seat and really fulfills all your entertainment needs with drama, comedy and curiosity. You will never be bored and it’s a show you could see over and over again and still pick up something new. The storyline is completely up for interpretation and I have no doubts that every member of the audience gained a different perspective of the meaning of the show.

It’s a beautiful show that I would recommend to any and everyone. It’s simple enough for children to enjoy and complex enough for the adults to gaze in awe. The hour and a half zooms by and you constantly find yourself gasping and nudging your neighbor wondering how this is even possible?

Make sure to include this or any of the Cirque du Soleil shows in your itinerary on your next trip to Las Vegas- because missing out on the entertainment is like missing out on the cake and ice cream at your birthday party- disappointing.
